Trip Based Travel Luggage

By Darrel Davis

Americans are known for many things, one surprising fact is they take fewer holidays than they are allowed. When those special days arrive, however, they want to get away and enjoy, but the journey can be complex. There are many things to be concerned about, and these days that includes the travel luggage.

Great vacations often include a trip by aircraft, one can go farther for that away from it all feeling. Taking an aircraft, however, complicates the event a bit more due to security concerns. With all that has changed, the least considered item has become the center of attention; the baggage.

Suitcases are personal belongings, and people decorate them, color coordinate them and even over-pack them, but they may have to trade them in. If the weight of the case is 15 pounds, that leaves only 40 pounds for stuff. The challenge is to find something light that will protect what is packed.

The amount of fuel an aircraft burns is directly proportional to its weight, so the old 66 pounds per bag standard is now 55 pounds thanks to skyrocketing fuel prices. This means that a 15 pound bag is problematic, even if it is much sturdier. Many airlines now charge per piece, the response being much more and heavier carry on.

Restricting the allowable weight of checked has resulted in heavier carry on. This causes problems in cabins as overhead bins fill rapidly. There is also an increased risk as heavier pieces are lifted to overhead bins during boarding and especially after landing.

While the industry struggles with the best way to accommodate these new challenges, there is little for the vacationing family can do except comply. They can, however, invest in newer travel luggage that is made with higher strength but low weight material. The destination is the important part, so careful planning and some smart decisions can keep the happiness in the holiday.
