The Temperament Of A German Shepherd

By Chris Miller

One of the reasons why owners adore the German Shepherd is that it has a really good personality and disposition. The German shepherd (as the name suggests) is originally from Germany and the breed were utilized as herding dogs by shepherds. It was Rittmeister Max von Stephanitz who saw a potential in this breed and started raising them. Thanks to his hard work, these days German shepherds are rated in the top 10 types.

But a German Shepherd is not faultless, which only indicates that it has so much of dog breed features that may or not be beneficial. If this is the very first time you are adopting a puppy, you might not know the significance of a canine's character. Instinct and surroundings add to German Shepherd performance.

You should always find a pet dog that is suitable for your way of life or it will be a struggle for you and your dog. Your dog's character must also match yours. Some pets may be left alone for several hours and know how to fend for themselves. Research on each breed's character before deciding.

Is a German Shepherd Best for You?

Not all pet dogs are the same! But some types have striking features. Research the breed characteristics of a German Shepherd before you adopt one. Allow me to share some of them.

The Good

A German Shepherd is courageous, loyal and confident. It is a really intelligent dog breed and can learn and grasp instructions swiftly. Due to its intelligence and bravery, German shepherds are used as service dogs in the police and military. Some people think that the German Shepherd isn't a good pet. This can't be farther from the truth. When taught, this dog is the ideal family dog. A German Shepherd is best suited to huge families and families with handicapped members. These pet dogs are very loyal and caring, although they look threatening.

The unconstructive side of the German shepherd disposition

A German Shepherd can lose interest when you do not find time to exercise with him. German shepherds should also be trained to just accept the owner as the leader of the pack or it will always try to fight for the position from his or her owner. Every member of the family must grasp the importance of an authority figure to your German Shepherd. In addition, German shepherds are very territorial in nature so just remember to try to help it socialize with other human beings and creatures. Complex training is needed before your German Shepherd can act like the best pet that it is.

A dog is a great comrade and companion. This stands true for a German shepherd as well. He can develop into your buddy as well as your protector! But, if you never have the time to coach it well or keep it company, this isn't a suitable dog for you.
