Protein supplements are the entire craze. Sure, they've been around for a few years but new brands keep popping up with various ways to eat, drink or otherwise absorb protein. Read on to discover which brand is joining the protein movement and revitalizing clear container packaging along the way.
I recently read the article "Sunkist's stand-up protein pouch delivers innovative dispensing," on Health Care Packaging's website. The article described Sunkist's protein drink product line, including clear container and hot-fill pouch packaging.
I know what you're thinking; Sunkist makes a protein drink? Maybe they should have stuck with their classic clear container and orange soda. A carbonated, citrus flavored protein beverage doesn't exactly sound refreshing. Apparently the company had another recipe in mind and it must be tasty, as it's available in several flavors and clear container styles.
Sunkist's Protein 24g, is available in orange (surprise!), grape and fruit punch flavors. It's packaged in a round family style (similar to a modern round) clear container. This particular style and design of clear container marks a milestone in the evolution of packaging. Like the protein pouches we will discuss later, this particular clear container is built to endure the heat of hot-filled products without any deforming consequences.
Moving on, Protein Shots (available in 42g and 25g variations) are presented in a test tube-like clear container, offering the product in a "better, smaller, faster, concentrated" form for those who crave protein on the go. To put it simply, they're lean, mean and hot-filled too!
The bulk version of Protein 24g is packaged a bit differently than the other products. First, it takes shape in a large pouch versus the typical clear container presentation we're all used to seeing beverages in. This isn't any standard pouch though, either. Like the bottled Protein 24g, the product is hot-filled into the pouch. The pouch then creates a hermetic seal that will keep the product fresh for up to two years.
The hot-fill Sunkist pouch has impacted the packaging world in a big way. The creation of a bag that can survive intense heat is very exciting for packagers who are looking toward the future of the industry. Other well known companies are trying to make a name for themselves within the protein trend, but from this perspective, it looks as if all will far short to Sunkist in terms of packaging innovation.
Packaging is an awesomely creative and ever changing industry. One day someone set out to create a helpful form of packaging, that's when the clear container was born. Today we still embrace the clear container, but we look beyond it and toward new, innovative forms and ways to make packaging better. That's where an inventive idea like the Sunkist pouch comes into play. Change is on the horizon; watch out because there's much more to come from the packaging world.
