Self Storage A Place To Store Anything Irrespective Of How Big or Little It Is

By Fred Shoreham

Whether you want to store family heirlooms, furniture, or a little fishing vessel, there are self storage options open to you. As with any service, storing your property does include a price, so doing the analysis before signing a rental contract with a local storage company is critical. Using the nearest storage location may seem like a brilliant idea, but regularly there are storage facilities found outside of towns and towns that have less cost and that offer better deals to those willing to make the drive to store their things. Consider all options before leasing a unit for storage.

When you contact a self storage facility, ask about pricing as well as any offers they might have. All facilities will have monthly rates which change depending on the dimensions of the unit requested and the extra services, for example security and climate control, you may need. Nevertheless many of those same facilities will offer reduced payments or other deals for those pleased to contract their services for a year or longer at a time. It's a smart idea to think about such offers, particularly if you intend to keep your things in storage for over a year.

If climate control and further security is needed, that might cost more at any self storage facility. In most cases such units will be heated or air conditioned depending on the time of the year and the internal humidity will be observed to keep the amount of mould formation as low as possible. Unfortunately, items may be stored in facilities with no climate control and the damage is realized years after when significant personal footage or papers are messed up by the expansion of mould or mildew. This climate control can be two or three times more pricey than standard storage rates.

Security is critical in any facility, but its significance may be a matter of degrees for you. If the things you are storing are considered very valuable to you, invest some extra in a self storage unit that has extra security features. All highly secure locations will have an exterior fence and locking gate that you will have a pin number to access. Also, your individual unit may have a numeric electronic lock or other device which will determine your identity before allowing entrance. This, with the presence of full time video monitoring can almost guarantee theft won't happen.

Most standard self storage facilities have a locking gate and unit door, but have little other security or climate control features. In this example, you will need to take the lead to provide what you can to guard your things. For instance, storing items in card boxes invites pests and moisture issues, so use plastic containers with snug-fitting lids to secure your things. Also, if you have the ability to hermetically seal clothing and other fabrics, do so before storage. Ultimately, if the floors are concrete they will allow collection of water from humidity. Use a tarp to separate your things from the floor.
