The Disadvantages of Database Performance Tuning

By Marcie Hutchison

Your database is like a car engine, and it needs to be tuned regularly so that it performs correctly. To save time and money, keep your database running at its optimum level with a Database Performance Tuning. Leaving an existing problem for any significant amount of time can have serious consequences.

You may find that your database is no longer capable of matching up with the demands of your business - this is a sign that you need a tune up. Rapid expansion affects the performance of applications of your server and network. However, the biggest downside of a poor database is the fact that customers could suffer.

No business will be able to generate a profit if the customers are unhappy. Unhappy clients are harmful because you lose their prospective income and because they give bad customer reviews. Every effort should be made to satisfy your customers.

One of the benefits of database analysis is that you can identify bottlenecks. Such a performance analysis will show you exactly what is slowing you down. Bottlenecks can really destroy an enterprise no matter how well your company, systems or people have performed at the beginning of a process only to get stacked up along the line.

These kinds of analyses consist of checks of the configuration and indexes, and may reveal the need for an LSI - SQL performance tuning. These tests are incredibly useful because they help you to optimize applications and to tweak your computing network. The term overall computing environment refers to your OS, existing software programs, business database, contact database, hardware, system networks and so on.

The more thorough tests also include a review of the actual architecture of your database. These tests investigate the quality of the way the database was designed. This test can show that the very foundation of your database is sub-standard, and if this is the case, you could need a complete overhaul and not just fine tuning.

In most cases, an assessment of your applications, memory, OS and so on is just not enough. Be warned that your expert may call for some pretty serious changes. It is always safer to trust professional - they can point out problems and recognize essential changes.

Implementation may not be as clear-cut as you might want it to be. Take your time and think about the impact that these changes could have. Making changes to your database will require a strategy so that your day to day business will not be affected.

Once all of the changes have been made, you will need to re-analyze your system. In some cases these tests are even more valuable than the initial tests. Just hold thumbs that these tests do not reveal that you need to do everything again.

Database performance tuning will take time, resources and effort. The potential benefits of SQL analysis make all of this worth it. In the long run, it is you who will benefit most, no one else.
