How To Determine Which CCTV Dome Camera Is Suitable

By Marissa Potter

The video surveillance industry has gone through many changes in recent years. Quality images are required to enable correct identification. This has fueled more research in device functionality. Being able to accurately determine what has been captured helps to eliminate errors. A CCTV dome camera has features that enable discreet operation in different applications. This type is not easy for a casual observer to know which direction it is facing, which is advantageous in security matters.

Surveillance cameras are designed in different formats to fit in varied applications. Some devices need to be wired physically to the system that records captured data. A second cable is also required to provide electrical power to the cameras. In other cases, only one cable is installed to deliver power and transmit the captured images. This technology is more common in modern day devices than in older models.

By hard wiring a device, there is more flexibility in the distance covered to the final point. Since some cables can transmit quality images for longer distances with little negative effects, they are more suitable in large areas. Such connections do not suffer from interference and are therefore able to provide services effectively. The challenge is in designing and laying of cables during installation.

Wireless devices, on the other hand, are less flexible since they rely on a clear line of sight to operate. This means anything that blocks the path between the transmitter and receiver will cause interference. They are therefore unsuitable for areas with trees, buildings or other objects that inhibit a clear line of sight. These devices require power too, so there has to be at least a single cable to provide it.

Large and expansive locations call for careful planning to ensure the devices acquired are suitable for that area. The size and capabilities of each lens should be determined to ascertain which of the wide or narrow angle variety is suitable. A qualified person is better placed to provide the required guidance. However, lenses that can be adjusted provide better flexibility for such applications.

In unsafe surroundings where vandalism is common or possible, suitable cameras are required to prevent sabotage. Vandal resistant cameras have inbuilt mechanisms to make it difficult for anyone to ruin or disable critical functions. They are able to continue providing surveillance duties even after vandalism attempts are made.

Since cameras rely on light to function properly, dark locations that do not have enough of it are challenging. To counter this problem, day and night cameras were developed. When there is not enough light, they use infra red lights to illuminate the area. Surveillance is therefore not affected when it gets darker. The images captured in low light conditions are, however, black and white and not colored.

A CCTV dome camera is one device that was engineered to fit and function in different applications. Before settling for a particular model, there is need to consider which functionality is most required. Having the right model for a particular environment will provide great results. If there are doubts regarding a particular choice, a professional can help to help determine the most suitable choice.
