Gently Used Forklift Equipment Sales

By Debrah Langston

Typically, dealers refurbish lease returns and sell them used. This lease turnover creates great opportunities for smaller companies to acquire equipment they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. This allows for maximum productivity at a fraction of the cost. What business owner wouldn't love that?

Port cities and shipping centers typically have large markets for used machines. Many major corporations have shipping centers in or near port cities, and they lease and return fleets from nearby dealers. Since port cities are also a great place to locate a small export oriented manufacturing firm, the demand for used machines is also strong.

While many smaller businesses can benefit from a low-cost used machine, it's important to shop carefully, since that machine will represent a much larger relative investment than for a large company. Since many small companies do not have significant experience with machines, finding a reputable dealer to maintain service is critical. It's also important to protect yourself from the insurance hazards of accidents during machine servicing - make sure your dealer has appropriate coverage to protect its people.

Many major corporations operate large fleets of machines. With today's emphasis on just-in-time shipping, for corporations like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Fed Ex and UPS, the fork lift has even become a critical link in the shipping chain. These companies focus on fleets of like-model machines to reduce maintenance and fleet management costs. Often, large corporations lease these large fleets.

However, machine age has a significant impact, since many buyers seek the most recent technological advances. Older machines may have low operational hours and still be relatively inexpensive because they lack the latest new gadgetry. The effect of machine age creates an opportunity for entry-level buyers. Buyers willing to accept older machines with fewer bells and whistles will often get a great cost/benefit ratio when purchasing a machine.
