What To Do About Hail Damage

By Tim Cooley

Should your vehicle be left out in the open during a hailstorm, it can result in extensive damages that can also be costly to repair. This is because the surface of cars and property are subjected to a great deal of force as the ice hits it. Many times, the large pelts can cause massive dents in the bodywork, but minor dents due to hail damage may be attended to at home.

After it has hailed, the next step is to assess the extent of damages, the vehicle has undergone. Where tiny dents have developed, a trick is to expose it to the sun for a few days. This allows the metal to heat up and naturally expand so that the surface areas are smoothed.

The most successful results are achieved where motor vehicles are left outdoors for a day or two. Protect the dash and interior with protective shields. The goal is to expose the damaged surfaces to as much heat as is possible.

The second option is to use a simple hairdryer to apply heat. The hairdryer can be held a few centimeters away from the vehicle body and for 2 minutes have the hot air applied. During this time refrain from touching the car and the edge of the dryer.

Where this is achieved, be sure not to damage the surface of the vehicle. The larger the dent, the more difficult it will be to use these simple methods. You will need to take it to a repair shop where the professional may advise on the cost for removal of dents.

Hail damage can cause significant hassle for vehicle owners. These bits of ice hit surfaces with great force often leaving large dents, which will not be smoothed with the application of heat or exposure to sunlight. Check with your insurer when it comes to coverage and having the indents addressed.
