How To Effectively Eradicate Bed Bugs

By Louisa Purpura

The phrase bed bug is a broad term used to reference all insect species that belong to the Cimex genus. The preferred food of Atlanta bed bugs is human blood, as they are parasitic by nature. This is why those dealing with an infestation must learn how to effectively eradicate such pests. Although not exclusively nocturnal, bugs of this kind enjoy attacking during the night and whenever possible they avoid daylight.

Insects of this type are highly skilled hitchhikers and it is through this method that they reach their intended destinations undetected. Although many people are unaware of this fact, it takes only a few small eggs or one fertile female to cause an invasion. If the female enters a suitcase, purse, briefcase or backpack, it will be quickly transported to a new location to begin an infestation.

Frequent travelers are at a very high risk for carrying such pests into their homes. Even upscale resorts and hotel establishments are targets for infestations. Those who travel internationally may inadvertently transport the pests into their dwelling or another building. This is particularly true if they are arriving from parts of the world where such insects are common.

The purchase of used furniture is also an avenue through which the insects can find their way into one's home. Even a well meaning co-worker or friend cannot say with absolute certainty that a secondhand object is 100% free of such pests. The latter also enjoy a cluttered environment, and therefore, those who exterminate bed bugs should keep their homes clean in order to avoid future infestations.

Red, itchy skin welts on a person's body are the most obvious sign of an infestation. They often appear in groups of three, although the reason for this is not yet known. Small spots of blood from crushed insects may be present on the surface of one's bedding, as well.

It is a bit more difficult to observe the insects themselves. One should consider taking a flashlight to bed and waiting quietly in the dark for thirty minutes. After this length of time has elapsed, he or she should then quickly pull up the covers and shine the light on the areas in question. The bugs are brown and feature slender, oval-shaped bodies.

It is generally not a good idea to try to deal with Atlanta bed bugs without availing oneself of the services of an exterminator. This is because the products necessary to eradicate such insects are typically not available to the general public. However, the exterminators Atlanta residents contact have the appropriate chemicals and equipment to entirely eliminate these troublesome pests. For this reason, property owners should seek the services of such a professional when an infestation is underway.
