Many Ideas To Nurture Your Writing Skills

By Allan Marsh

Studying process involves a lot of written assignments that are usually the deciding points of any course grade. Even if they are sometimes hard to produce and time consuming, they are essential to your academic and professional futures. Instructors look at your essays to determine your writing skills and your ability to analyze, assess, compare and contrast, and also to determine how well you express an opinion or can convince others of it. It is obvious to see that your grade is going to be influenced by many factors. Written assignments vary, and you should be able to write any of them.

Some of the hardest essays to write are those in which you are required to compare and contrast. Though you might think it is easy at first, it really depends on what it is that you must compare and contrast.

While it is already complicated to compare tangible objects such as buildings or monuments, comparing something as abstract as a philosophical current or concept is much harder to do. It is very important to choose objects or events that can be put under the same category at least in one feature out of the others. After all, could you possibly find a way to compare something so different as orange juice and rocky mountains? Of course, this is not the hardest step.

So, what happens if the matters you are assigned don't seem to go together at all? A bit of research and assessment go a long way. It will be a good thing to make a chart putting the things you want to compare and contrast on the top and the characteristic features aside. This will allow you to see similarities and differences. After the evaluation process you may start actual essay writing. You should also do a little research on styles, structures and formats, unless, of course, your instructor has already given you specific guidelines. Something of this nature is very important, because it will show your instructor that you are smart, educated, creative, resourceful, and above all, unique in the way you approach a task.

Proofreading and editing also rank among the most important things in writing an essay. Since you will probably be tired and blind to mistakes after you have just finished writing the essay, it might be a good idea to wait a while before you go back and assess any possible errors, to make sure you can do so with fresh eyes. Once the process is complete, you can confidently submit your project and rest easy, knowing that you have done your best to promote success.
