Selecting Amongst The Different Car Insurance Types

By Lilia Maillet

When it comes to car insurance, many South Africans do not have to be concerned with a complicated process. This is because there are only 3 main car insurance types from which to base a policy which differs in terms of the cover provided and the cost of monthly premiums. It is necessary to consider the range of features that are offered with each policy that will best fit with your needs.

Many are unaware of the tremendous benefit adequate coverage can provide especially when it comes to personal expenses and the costs of third party damages. The higher incidence of crime means that theft and vandalism are everyday possibilities and requires suitable protection. Determine whether you will have the equity to cover the out of pocket expenses that are involved in accidents and other damages.

It is impossible to predict the future and therefore protecting oneself has become a priority in many households. Should your vehicle become extensively damaged or require part replacements, it can amount to thousands of rands. The main types of car cover include comprehensive, third party theft and fire and lastly third party.

For most consumers, the purchase of comprehensive cover is required. This form of protection will compensate those involved in accidents, victims of theft, natural disasters, floods, hail and fire damage. The result is that your expenses are covered as stated within the policy when it comes to accidents.

The third party fire and theft policy will cover damage involving an accident only for the victims and natural disaster for personal losses. If you are responsible for an accident, only the third party involved will be provided with the necessary compensation. You will however be covered should the asset sustain damage as a result of fires and other natural disasters.

Third party coverage will only compensate the victim that has experienced loss or damage as a result of your actions. This includes any medical expenses which may have been incurred by the victim. It is the cheapest form of protection as none of your personal expenses will be covered.

One also has the option to add benefits such as car hire at an extra cost to the policy. It is important to take the time to determine which car insurance types are most suited to personal requirements. Assess the costs involved and whether you will be able to afford the damages or losses involved in accidents.
