The Fleur-De-Lis And It's Role In Jewelry

By Gordon Frank

Fleur-de-Lis jewelry has definitely come out in full force recently. While attending a beautiful wide and complex trade fair in New York City last weekend, & virtually every jewelry booth had at least one accessory that in some way highlighted the symbol.

It is shameful to admit this, but it wasn't until recently that I did the necessary research to discover the real meaning behind the fleur-de-lis, & the results astounded me. Apparently the literal meaning of the fleur-de-lis is "flower of lily", which gives a reason why its structure is largely suggestive of either an iris or a lily. Although today, the fleur is usually used simply because it "looks pretty," it too can be an indication of political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic or religious beliefs.

This is a list of the various meanings behind the fleur-de-lis:

*The fleur once emerged on European coats of arms & flags. * Originally it was a symbol that was paired with the French monarchy, and is now looked upon as an "enduring symbol of France." * The rule of King Juan Carlos I, an old member of the original French monarchy, is denoted by this symbol. * The fleur is has association with with old French colonies, such as Quebec & Louisiana. * It is the emblem of the Swiss Municipality of Schlieren, Zrich. * It stands for the Holy Trinity & the Virgin Mary. * It is considered an iconographic attribute of the archangel Gabriel, notably in representations of The Annunciation. * Also, due to a tradition started by Flavio Gioja, the symbol is usually used on a compass rose to mark the direction North.

In modern ages, this symbol is an all powerful force! Recently I was viewing the third Shrek movie (do not judge me) and the character Prince Charming was wearing an outfit decorated with this French insignia. You can find it used in wallpaper, in architecture, in company symbols, and, of course, jewelry.

In all, I have faith that the greatest part about the fleur-de-lis is how such an aged symbol has, over the years, gained in popularity & become stylized to fit the requirements of almost every culture in some way, shape, or form.
