Joseph and Mary - Privileged Couple

By Dwight Keller

What a delightful couple (Mary and Joseph); bound together by a deep and true love and genuine respect. It was early in their relationship, with marriage in view, that Mary discovered that she was with kid. This had come as little surprise, as the angel Gabriel said to her some weeks formerly that she would be the mummy of the Lord Jesus. This would be attained by no human agency "the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing that shall be born of thee (or "that which shall be born of thee, holy") shall be called the Boy of God." God thus was His Father; Joseph was Mary's hubby but never the daddy of the Lord Jesus.

His thus was a supernatural conception; thought of the Almighty Spirit. Adam and Eve came into this world by creation; we all arrived here by generation but Christ came by Incarnation. It is described in the Word of God as a great puzzle but we think it in its each detail though we cannot understand or rationalize it. In this way the Lord Jesus did not partake of human sin but all the while He was here, was perfect, meaning that this was very unlikely for Him to sin.

Though these details had been communicated to Mary, Joseph was not at that point mindful of all that had occurred and as he didn't need to embarrass Mary, he advised her to stay in seclusion till the birth of the child. He could have had misgivings about Mary; he may also have considered not going thru with the marriage but then the angel of the Lord seemed to him additionally , in a dream, and advised him of the facts of the situation. This put Joseph's mind at ease and allayed all his fears pertaining to the pureness and chastity of his young spouse to be.

Just as the time for her to give birth to the Lord Jesus approached, a decree from Caesar Augustus meant that all subjects had to revisit the town of their birth to register in a great nationwide census. This led to Joseph and Mary having to make the long and arduous trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem, Mary being great with kid. When they arrived in Bethlehem, there were crowds everywhere and so there wasn't any room for them in the hotel. They were compelled to go to a humble dwelling and while there, Mary gave birth to her firstborn Son, "wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger". In her arms she lovingly cradled the Boy of God, incarnate in a honey.

This was also to fulfil one of the many predictions associated with the Lord Jesus, all of which were fulfilled with intriguing precision, in their each detail. Centuries prior to that significant event, the prophesier Micah had foretold the precise positioning of the Saviour's birth.

After their passing stay in Bethlehem, they returned to Nazareth where Jesus spent the following thirty years or so , as the lowly carpenter, labouring patiently until He started His public ministry, so well known to us with its stalwart miracles and wonderful parables.
