Choosing the right garage door for your home

By Alain Beaudent

When you are choosing a garage door you'll have to take into consideration many different things before making your decision. Everyone wants their new garage door to look good, but there might be other things on your mind, such as how long the door will last or what material the door is made from.

It's common to find that new garage doors will be built to exacting standards, with many featuring strong steel braces through the structure of the door to improve rigidity. It's the outer face of the door that everyone can see, and this is the material upon which you'll have to make the most difficult decision.

Steel garage doors are the perfect solution if you are looking for something which is strong, robust and won't burn a hole in your pocket. Another great thing about steel garage doors is that they are available in a huge range of different designs so can be tailored to suit modern homes or even traditional homes.

If you are looking for something which is a little warmer and perhaps a little more stylish, you should take a look at timber garage doors. Timber garage doors have a beautiful finish and look fantastic when used on any home. Because these doors use real wood you do however need to take the maintenance aspect into account.

A further option is a glass reinforced polyester (GRP) door. A GRP door looks great and has a very low maintenance aspect. These doors are being used more frequently and come in a wide range of options.

After you have decided on the type of garage door, you'll be able to look at getting the right size of door and whether you want a door which can be lifted automatically, or a door which is manually operated.
