The beginnings of the G-Shock and why it's the ultimate watch, Kikuo Ibe and the 'Triple 10'
The G-Shock watch by Casio has become an iconic watch. It all started back in 1981 when Casio brought together a team headed by Kikuo Ibe. The project focused on the idea of developing the ultimate watch around the concept of the 'Triple 10'.
The concept of the 'Triple 10' was based around 3 principles that any watch they developed would have to pass. In order to do this the watch would have to have a lifespan of 10 years, be shock resistant to a fall of 10m and be water resistant to a depth of 10 atmospheres.
After a 2 year period they had finally designed a watch that could meet the 'Triple 10' benchmark. In 1983 Casio launched the first G-shock watch, the DW-5000C-1A. Following its launch the DW-5000 has had more than 30 different models released all of which met the 'Triple 10'. The models included DW-5000's that were mud and dirt resistant and included models with sensors that measured heat and pressure.
The G-Shock watch is one that has continuously evolved with each model that has been released. With each release the G-Shock series has pushed the capabilities and expectations of what watches can do a bit further. Looking back Kikuo Ibe said "Watches are thin and fragile --- that was the common sense. I wanted to challenge it". That is certainly what the DW-5000 did and what G-Shocks continue to do today.
G-Shocks are the ultimate tough watch, built to last as long as its owner. It's on the back of this and the clever use of marketing and design, in particular colour that the G-Shock has become an iconic watch.
In order to get to the DW-5000C-1A Kikuo Ibe and his team went through 200 prototypes before they were satisfied they had built the ultimate watch, a watch that could withstand the 'Triple 10'. The evidence of this is still here today as all new G-Shock models must meet the high standards that the original G-Shock had to pass.
The result of this is an iconic watch that is responsible for revolutionising the watch market and what watches could do. Watches nowadays can last lifetimes; will your G-Shock outlast you?
