Feeding a Hermit Crab a Nutritious and Healthy Diet

When you are a new hermit crab owner you may wonder what types of food you should be feeding a hermit crab. What do they like to eat?

This is a good question!

Many individuals are truly surprised to learn that hermit crabs enjoy eating many different types of foods. There is a wide assortment when it comes to choosing something for feeding a hermit crab. This means that you and your pet are in for a satisfying experience.

Visit your local pet store and see what is available to you. Most likely you will find container after container of hermit safe food. There are various types of commercial foods available for your hermit crab.

A Hermit Crab likes Variety

You should consider rotating two or three different kinds of hermit crab food every day. You do not care to eat the same kind of food each day and neither does your hermit crab.

Your hermit crab enjoys eating the best commercial foods. Some specialists will tell you that some ingredients are not good for a hermit crab.

Always read the label of any commercial hermit crab food to ensure that it does not include copper sulfate or ethoxyquin in the list of ingredients.

Many pet owners avoid feeding their hermit crab such items which include these common pesticides. Although, there is little evidence for either side, it is always best to stay on the safe side while feeding a hermit crab.

Hermit crabs do enjoy eating people food as well. Once you make sure that the crab has all the nutrients it requires you can feed it some of your favorite foods.

Hermit crabs enjoy eating:

* Diced pears, bananas, coconut, and apples

* Peeled grapes

* Peeled grapes

* Peanut butter (This one is often messy!)

* Cooked and cool potatoes

* Lettuce that's been shredded

Everything needs to be in crab-size bites so the crab can pick it up and eat it easily. Having to struggle with the food is reduced when you ensure the crab has the right size pieces of food.

Baby food is a popular food item for feeding a hermit crab, since they enjoy the sweetness and it includes various nutrients the crab needs.

You can use a large plastic spoon to feed a hermit crab or you may place a small amount in the food bowl for it to find on its own.

While feeding a hermit crab these types of foods you ensure they get the nutrients they require as well as a few treats that can keep your pet crab healthy and happy for years to come!
